Roadside Safety Breakdown Panel
Centurion has designed a simple but highly effective device for warning other road users of immediate danger in the aftermath of an accident or breakdown.
The Roadside Safety Breakdown Panel (RSBP) is a high-visibility, fluorescent, waterproof panel, incorporating 2 or 3 highly visible orange triangles made from reflective prismatic tape, that can be quickly attached to the rear of any broken down vehicle to warn other road users of a potentially dangerous obstruction.
Why is the Roadside Safety Breakdown Panel an important innovation?
"In most cases where accidents, injuries and fatalities have occurred on British roads, it was reported that drivers of approaching vehicles did not see the hazard warning triangle or the broken down vehicle's flashing hazard lights in time. This was either due to following larger vehicles that obstructed the inside view, or due to the inclement weather (i.e. rain or snow), thus reducing the driver's visibility in seeing any of the vehicle warning signs."
UK Road Safety Officials
"We decided to stay in the vehicle waiting for breakdown recovery as the weather was atrocious and the whole family would have been soaked."
Driver statement
"I knew I could be at risk from a potential accident but there was no way I was taking my kids up the side of the motorway bank in this freezing weather."
Driver statement
The RSBP is quickly and easily fitted externally, therefore it displays a highly visual warning immediately to following traffic.
The RSBP can be seen from distances of over 1 km, offering far greater potential for protection for drivers, passengers and vehicles in the event of a breakdown emergency than hazard warning devices currently available on the market. The RSBP is designed for use in conjunction with a vehicle's own integrated safety systems as well as conventional, portable hazard warning devices.
The RSBP offers people more time to identify a hazard on the road at much safer distances and react accordingly, i.e. SLOW DOWN AND PROCEED WITH CAUTION! All vehicle manufacturers hope that their vehicles will never break down. However, as with anything mechanical, vehicle breakdowns can occur with little or no warning, poor maintenance, tyre changing or through accidents occurring.
Many manufacturers already equip their vehicles with hazard warning triangles as part of their commitment to driver safety. Some drivers do use them in emergencies, but this may limit saving lives because:
- They are too small to be noticed, and are therefore often seen too late
- Not all vehicles are equipped with them – UK legislation does not require it
- They have to be placed at a distance from the breakdown, which means the driver has to leave the vehicle unattended and unmarked and walk back along the road
- Following traffic may not be warned in time to avoid colliding with the obstacle.
"I did not want to leave my young child alone in the vehicle while I walked back along the road and place the hazard triangle."
Driver statement.
"By placing the warning triangle back along the road, I would have placed myself in greater danger from approaching traffic."

Why the RSBP?
- It is considerably larger and therefore more visible than warning triangles.
- It is quick and simple to attach, minimising the time delay between the breakdown and the ability to warn other drivers of a hazard.
- It does not require the driver to leave the vehicle unattended, putting their life in danger. The driver simply attaches the panel to the back of the vehicle, enabling the hazard to be clearly identifiable.
- It is lightweight and highly portable, and comes in 3 sizes (small, medium, and large) to suit any vehicle. It is adaptable for all vehicles from motorbikes to large HGVs. The RSBP is so versatile, simple to use and effective, more people will be encouraged to carry them, and use them whenever needed.
- The high visibility and size of the RSBP, (which includes reflective prismatic taped hazard triangles that attract attention and reflect headlights), will enable people to see the warning more quickly, and react faster.
Specifications
The RSBP comes in three sizes:
Small – 0.8m x 1.0m - for small vehicles e.g. minis, sports cars, small commercial vehicles, small trailers, etc. (inc. 2 warning reflective triangles)
Medium – 0.8m x 1.5m - for larger, family-sized vehicles e.g. saloons, estates, commercial vans, small HGVs, etc. (inc. 2 warning reflective triangles)
Large – 0.8m x 2.0m - HGVs, Luton vans, articulated vehicles, motor homes, commercial vehicles, caravans, towed trailers, etc. (inc. 3 warning reflective triangles)
Regardless of size, all panels allow the vehicles own hazard-warning lights to remain visible at all times.
The panel fits externally to the vehicle by the use of adjustable clips and stretchable cords. Because it is used externally, there is no need to expose the interior of the vehicle (i.e. car boot) to the elements.
On larger vehicles the panel can be attached either vertically or horizontally. If used horizontally, which is recommended, the driver use the apexes of the triangles to direct the flow of following traffic either to the right or to the left of the obstacle, depending on the safest route.
The panel is washable, fast drying, durable, and lightweight. Its compact size when folded into its integrated pocket, enables it to be stowed in the boot of the vehicle alongside the warning triangle, in the dashboard, or using the map pocket of the car's rear seats.
The RSBP product is covered by Centurion's BSI 9001-2000 accreditation.
