Location

Middle East, bordering the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Red Sea, between Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Problems
We advise against all but essential travel to northern Yemen. There is a high threat of terrorism. Incidents of violent crime against foreigners are rare. You should exercise caution at all times. There is a high risk of kidnapping. There are still some mines lying around. Off road travel is not recommended. Personal security, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters.
Water
Use bottled water only.
Terrain
Narrow coastal plain backed by flat-topped hills and rugged mountains; dissected upland desert plains in centre slope into the desert interior of the Arabian Peninsula.
Climate
Mostly desert; hot and humid along west coast; temperate in western mountains affected by seasonal monsoon; extraordinarily hot, dry, harsh desert in east.
Natural Hazards
Sandstorms and dust storms in summer.
Health Issues
Bilharzia, cholera, hepatitis A, malaria, polio, rabies, typhoid, yellow fever.

Environmental Issues
Very limited natural fresh water resources; inadequate supplies of potable water; overgrazing; soil erosion; desertification.
Road Safety
Driving standards are poor and mountain roads hazardous. Avoid all travel at night. Do not travel off well-used roads without an experienced guide. Care should also be taken to avoid minefields.
