Location

Eastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Poland, Romania, and Moldova in the west and Russia in the east.

Problems
Safety is a growing concern for travellers. Street muggings are on the increase in all the main cities. Tourists are considered to be easy targets. Do not wander around alone after dark. Weapons (assorted), vehicle security, personal security, kidnappings, gunfire, checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, cold weather injuries, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, civil disturbances / unrest, terrorism.
Water
Use bottled water only.
Terrain
Most of Ukraine consists of fertile plains (steppes) and plateaus, mountains being found only in the west (the Carpathians), and in the Crimean Peninsula in the extreme south.
Climate
Temperate continental; Mediterranean only on the southern Crimean coast; precipitation disproportionately distributed, highest in west and north, lesser in east and south-east; winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold farther inland; summers are warm across the greater part of the country, hot in the south.

Environmental Issues
Inadequate supplies of potable water; air and water pollution; deforestation; radiation contamination in the north-east from 1986 accident at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Road Safety
An International Driving Licence is required to drive legally in Ukraine. Avoid driving outside urban areas.
