Location

South-eastern Europe and south-western Asia (that portion of Turkey west of the Bosporus is geographically part of Europe), bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Georgia, and bordering the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, between Greece and Syria.

Problems
There is a high threat of terrorism in Turkey. Target sites include banks, restaurant and hotels linked to Western interests. Street robbery and pickpocketing are common in tourist areas. Vehicle security, drugs, personal security, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, clothing & equipment, sanitation / sterilisation, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Sexual harassment of women who are travelling alone in the east can be dangerous. Drunkenness is not tolerated. Avoid all travel to Eastern Turkey.
Water
Safe in capital - use bottled water everywhere else.
Terrain
High central plateau (Anatolia); narrow coastal plain; several mountain ranges.
Climate
Temperate; hot, dry summers with mild, wet winters; harsher in interior.
Natural Hazards
Very severe earthquakes, especially in northern Turkey, along an arc extending from the Sea of Marmara to Lake Van.
Health Issues
Avian influenza, cholera, hepatitis A, malaria, polio, rabies, typhoid, yellow fever.

Environmental Issues
Water pollution from dumping of chemicals and detergents; air pollution, particularly in urban areas; deforestation; concern for oil spills from increasing Bosporus ship traffic.
Road Safety
Take care when travelling by road throughout Turkey, as road conditions and driving standards can be poor. Serious traffic accidents are common, particularly at night.
