The seafront area in Lome, particularly around the Hotel Sarakawa, is dangerous and you should avoid this area. Pickpocketing and common theft are rife. You should enter and exit public places such as restaurants in groups rather than on your own. Vehicle security, personal security, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, checkpoints, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters.

Gently rolling savannah in north; central hills; southern plateau; low coastal plain with extensive lagoons and marshes.
Tropical; hot, humid in south; semi-arid in north.
Hot, dry harmattan wind can reduce visibility in north during winter; periodic droughts.
Bacterial and protozoal diarrhoea, bilharzia, cholera, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, malaria, meningococcal meningitis, polio, rabies, schistosomiasis, typhoid fever, yellow fever. Medical facilities are poor.

Deforestation attributable to slash-and-burn agriculture and the use of wood for fuel; water pollution presents health hazards and hinders the fishing industry; air pollution increasing in urban areas.
Do not travel outside Lome at night. Roads are poorly lit and often hazardous.
