Location

Northern South America, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between French Guiana and Guyana.

Problems
Burglary, armed robbery and other violent crime occur with some frequency in Paramaribo and outlying areas. Walking at night is not recommended anywhere in the city. Personal security, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Beachwear should not be worn away from the pool / beach. Do not take photos of military, police or public subjects.
Terrain
Mostly rolling hills; narrow coastal plain with swamps.
Climate
Tropical; moderated by trade winds.
Natural Hazards
Torrential rainfall, flooding.
Health Issues
Medical facilities are severely limited. Bilharzia, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, malaria, polio, rabies, typhoid, yellow fever.

Environmental Issues
Deforestation as timber is cut for export; pollution of inland waterways by small-scale mining activities.
Road Safety
Roads are poorly maintained. Borders are in dispute. If you are near a border area you should keep this in mind and exercise caution.
