Location

Northern Africa, bordering the Red Sea, between Egypt and Eritrea.

Problems
There is a high threat of terrorism. Inadvisable to travel to any of the southern provinces due to civil war. Local militia groups, weapons (various), ballistics danger areas, mines, vehicle security, vehicle convoys, personal security, ambushes, kidnappings, bandits / corruption, gunfire / snipers, legal / illegal checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters.
Water
Use bottled water only.
Terrain
Generally flat, featureless plain; mountains in far south, north-east and west; desert dominates the north.
Climate
Tropical in south; arid desert in north; rainy season varies by region (April to November).
Natural Hazards
Dust storms and periodic persistent droughts.
Health Issues
African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), amoebiasia, avian influenza, bacterial and protozoal diarrhoea, bilharzia, cholera, dengue fever, giarelia, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, malaria, meningococcal meningitis, polio, rabies, salmonella, schistosomiasis, shigella, typhoid fever, visceral leishmaniasis.

Environmental Issues
Inadequate supplies of potable water; wildlife populations threatened by excessive hunting; soil erosion; desertification; periodic drought.
Road Safety
You are at risk of involvement in traffic accidents when using public transport, as many vehicles are unsafe. Only major roads are metalled. Roads are unlit and used by pedestrians, donkey carts and rickshaws, as well as motor vehicles. Although driving requires a licence and insurance, most drivers do not have either. Blood money can be demanded at accidents.
