Location

Oceania, group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Papua New Guinea.

Problems
Permission is required before the use of beaches, footpaths, etc. Personal security, general travel, navigation, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Swimming not advised around the sea at Honiara, due to sharks, bristle-worms, stinging coral and sea urchins.
Water
Use bottled water only.
Terrain
Mostly rugged mountains with some low coral atolls.
Climate
Tropical monsoon; few extremes of temperature and weather.
Natural Hazards
Typhoons, but rarely destructive; geologically active region with frequent earth tremors; volcanic activity. Tidal waves can occur.
Health Issues
Hepatitis A, malaria, meningitis, polio, typhoid.

Environmental Issues
Deforestation; soil erosion; many of the surrounding coral reefs are dead or dying.
Road Safety
Very few roads, most are heavily potholed and in some areas bridges have collapsed. Standards of driving and vehicle maintenance are poor.
