Advice is not to travel to Rwanda unless on essential business. Local militia groups, weapons (various), ballistics danger areas, mines, vehicle security, personal security, ambushes, kidnappings, bandits / corruption, gunfire, legal / illegal checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Supplies of water, fuel, accommodation and power are hard to find.
Use bottled water only.
Mostly grassy uplands and hills; relief is mountainous with altitude declining from west to east.
Temperate; two rainy seasons (February to April, November to January); mild in mountains with frost and snow possible.
Periodic droughts; the volcanic Virunga mountains are in the north-west along the border with Congo (Kinshasa).

Deforestation results from uncontrolled cutting of trees for fuel; overgrazing; soil exhaustion; soil erosion; widespread poaching.
The road infrastructure from Kigali to all major towns is good. There can be landslides on some major roads during rain in late spring and autumn. Road travel after dark should be avoided. Local driving standards are poor.
