Street crime, including mugging and theft, is a significant problem. Register with your embassy upon arrival. Personal security, terrorism can occur, general travel, navigation, off road driving, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Recommended to travel in groups whenever possible.

Western coastal plain (costa), high and rugged Andes in centre (sierra), eastern lowland jungle of Amazon Basin (selva).
Varies from tropical in east to dry desert in west; temperate to frigid in Andes.

Deforestation (some the result of illegal logging); overgrazing of the slopes of the costa and sierra leading to soil erosion; desertification; air pollution in Lima; pollution of rivers and coastal waters from municipal and mining wastes.
Travel by road outside major cities is not recommended after dark. Driving standards are poor, drivers overtake on either side with little concern for oncoming traffic. Crashes resulting in death or injury occur frequently.
