Western Africa, bordering the Gulf of Guinea, between Benin and Cameroon.
There has been an increase in crime and armed attacks against expatriates in the Niger Delta. Militants have carried out attacks on oil and gas facilities. You should be aware of the threat from terrorism in Nigeria. Hostage-taking, murder, personal security, vehicle security, illegal checkpoints, hot climates and diseases, illnesses, business fraud. Political situation is uncertain; high incidence of street crime; do not travel around after dark.

Southern lowlands merge into central hills and plateaus; mountains in south-east, plains in north.
Varies; equatorial in south, tropical in centre, arid in north.
Periodic droughts; flooding.
Avian influenza, bacterial and protozoal diarrhoea, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, malaria, meningococcal meningitis, typhoid fever; one of the most highly endemic areas for Lassa fever.
Medical care very limited except for a few private hospitals in cities. Insurance is essential.
Soil degradation; rapid deforestation; urban air and water pollution; desertification; oil pollution - water, air, and soil; has suffered serious damage from oil spills; loss of arable land; rapid urbanisation.
Arrange to be met at the airport by someone you know, if possible. Bogus greeters are a problem. Frequent reports of robberies and carjackings. Be particularly vigilant at traffic lights and in traffic jams. There are authorised and unauthorised checkpoints,some for security checks,others to extort small payments. Public transport is dangerous.
