Location

Southern Africa, island in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar.

Problems
Although crime rates are low, you should be aware that theft, assault and rape occur. Vehicle security, personal security, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters.
Water
Safe to drink in cities, hotels and resorts. Use bottled water in the rural areas.
Terrain
Small coastal plain rising to discontinuous mountains encircling central plateau.
Climate
Tropical, modified by south-east trade winds; warm, dry winter (May to November); hot, wet, humid summer (November to May).
Natural Hazards
Cyclones (November to April); almost completely surrounded by reefs that may pose maritime hazards.
Health Issues
Bilharzia, chikungunya virus, hepatitis A, malaria, polio, stone fish, typhoid, yellow fever.

Environmental Issues
Water pollution, degradation of coral reefs.
Road Safety
Driving standards vary and there are frequent though minor accidents. After dark, pedestrians and unlit two-wheeled vehicles can be a particular hazard.
