Location

Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, between Latvia and Russia.

Problems
Be aware to the risk of mugging, pickpocketing and bag snatching. Avoid poorly lit areas. Do not accept food or drink from strangers in bars /nightclubs. Some visitors have been drugged and subsequently robbed. Car theft is rife, particularly of / from new or expensive models. Vehicle security, personal security, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, cold weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs.
Water
Water is relatively safe. If in doubt use bottled water.
Terrain
Lowland, many scattered small lakes, fertile soil.
Climate
Transitional, between maritime and continental; wet, moderate winters and summers.
Natural Hazards
No major hazards.
Health Issues
Diptheria, hepatitis A, polio, rabies, tick-borne encephalitis, typhoid.

Environmental Issues
Contamination of soil and groundwater with petroleum products and chemicals at military bases.
Road Safety
Road traffic accidents are common. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Lithuania between November 10 and April 1.
