Tourists should exercise caution as petty crime is a problem. Car theft is rife. Vehicle security, personal security, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building/office security, cold weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs. It is advisable to carry a photocopy of your passport or ID.

Latvia's environment has benefited from a shift to service industries after the country regained independence; the main environmental priorities are improvement of drinking water quality and sewage system, household, and hazardous waste management, as well as reduction of air pollution; in 2001, Latvia closed the EU accession negotiation chapter on environment committing to full enforcement of EU environmental directives by 2010.
Road traffic accidents are common. Drivers should not attempt to move a vehicle which has been involved in an accident, even if it is blocking the road. In winter, equip your car for severe conditions.
