Location

Central Asia, west of China.

Problems
There is a threat from terrorism in Kyrgystan. Ahistory of terrorist activity and armed violence, including hostage taking, particularly south and west of Osh. Mugging and theft is increasing in cities and rural areas. Exercise caution at all times. Do not walk around at night. Weapons (assorted), vehicle security, personal security, ambushes, kidnappings, gunfire/snipers, legal/illegal checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building/office security, cold weather injuries, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures/customs, communications, civil disturbances/unrest, terrorism.
Water
Water is safe in the capital and hotels/resorts. Use bottled water everywhere else.
Terrain
Peaks of Tien Shan and associated valleys and basins encompass entire nation.
Climate
Dry continental to polar in high Tien Shan; sub-tropical in southwest (Fergana Valley); temperate in northern foothill zone.
Natural Hazards
No major hazards.
Health Issues
Brucellosis, diphtheria, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, malaria, meningitis, polio, rabies, tuberculosis, typhoid.

Environmental Issues
Water pollution; many people get their water directly from contaminated streams and wells; as a result, water-borne diseases are prevalent; increasing soil salinity from faulty irrigation practices.
Road Safety
Limited service stations and petrol/water outside Beshkek and Osh. Vehicles and roads are poorly maintained. We advise against using local buses and/or minibuses. The roads outside the capital are often blocked by snow in the winter months.
