Location

Middle East, bordering the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Problems
There is a high threat of terrorism. You should review your security arrangements carefully and maintain a high level of security awareness. Incidents of violent crime against foreigners are rare. Register with the Embassy on arrival. Personal security, checkpoints, general travel, navigation, off road driving, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Do not travel anywhere near the border with Iraq. All Islamic laws must be respected. Women are to dress modestly. Men should not wear shorts or go topless in public. Danger of unexploded mines and ordnance remains throughout the country. Seek local advice before using beaches and going into the countryside.
Water
Water is safe to drink in the capital, cities and hotels. Use bottled water in the rural areas or if in doubt.
Terrain
Flat to slightly undulating desert plain.
Climate
Dry desert; intensely hot summers; short, cool winters.
Natural Hazards
Sudden cloudbursts are common from October to April and bring heavy rain, which can damage roads and houses; sandstorms and dust storms occur throughout the year, but are most common between March and August.

Environmental Issues
Limited natural fresh water resources; some of world's largest and most sophisticated desalination facilities provide much of the water; air and water pollution; desertification.
Road Safety
Driving is hazardous. Many drivers pay scant attention to other road users. They will exceed speed limits, switch lanes without warning, and ignore traffic lights. Hailing a taxi from the road is not advisable, particularly if you are female. Book taxis in advance by phone.
