Middle East, north-west of Saudi Arabia.

Problems
There is a high threat from terrorism in Jordan. Western interests may be particular targets, although attacks could be indiscriminate. Military keep a low profile. Personal security, checkpoints, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Beachwear to be confined to the pools / beach.

Use bottled water only.
Terrain
Mostly desert plateau in east, highland area in west; Great Rift Valley separates East and West Banks of the Jordan River.
Climate
Mostly arid desert; rainy season in west (November to April).
Natural Hazards
Droughts; periodic earthquakes, tremors.
Health Issues
Avian influenza, dehydration, hepatitis A, polio, rabies, typhoid, yellow fever.

Road Safety
There is a high number of road accidents. Drive with care. Vehicle checkpoints are common. Under Jordanian law a driver is always guilty if a pedestrian is hit. Beware minefields near military installations and borders. These are usually fenced off, however fences may be in a state of disrepair.
