Location

Eastern Asia, island chain between the North Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, east of the Korean Peninsula.

Problems
Very expensive place to visit. Japan has a reputation for safety. Personal security, general travel, navigation, climate injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs.
Water
Local water is fairly good everywhere.
Terrain
Mostly rugged and mountainous.
Climate
Varies from tropical in south to cool temperate in north.
Natural Hazards
Many dormant and some active volcanoes; about 1,500 seismic occurrences (mostly tremors) every year; tsunamis; typhoons (June to October)..
Health Issues
Avian influenza, hepatitis A, polio, typhoid.

Environmental Issues
Air pollution from power plant emissions results in acid rain; acidification of lakes and reservoirs degrading water quality and threatening aquatic life; Japan is one of the largest consumers of fish and tropical timber, contributing to the depletion of these resources in Asia and elsewhere.
Road Safety
Roads in Japan are well maintained. It is compulsory to carry your driving licence. Be aware of cyclists who travel on the wrong side of the road, often without lights. Check your insurance is sufficient to cover personal liability.
