Location

Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Egypt and Lebanon

Problems
You should maintain a high level of vigilance as the threat of terrorism is high. Most of Israel is crime free and not usually a problem. Take sensible precautions to protect yourself. The transport system is frequently targeted by Palestinian terrorists. Car bombs and suicide bombers are common events. Riots take place with general occurrence and there are many times when the innocent Western traveller is caught up in this violence.
Water
Water is safe to drink in the capital, cities and hotels. Use bottled water in the rural areas. If in doubt, use bottled water.
Terrain
Negev desert in the south; low coastal plain; central mountains; Jordan Rift Valley.
Climate
Temperate; hot and dry in southern and eastern desert areas.
Natural Hazards
Sandstorms may occur during spring and summer; droughts; periodic earthquakes.
Health Issues
Avian influenza, hepatitis A, polio, rabies, typhoid.
Hospital: Kiryah Hadassah, Jerusalem. Tel: 2-777111
Environmental Issues
Limited arable land and natural fresh water resources pose serious constraints; desertification; air pollution from industrial and vehicle emissions; groundwater pollution from industrial and domestic waste, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides.
Road Safety
Driving in Israel and the Occupied Territories is erratic and there are frequent accidents. If travelling into the desert, go with others, taking adequate water and supplies.
