Location

Northern South America, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Suriname and Venezuela.

Problems
Crime levels in Guyana are high. There are frequent indiscriminate shootings, armed robberies and car-jackings. You are advised to exercise extreme caution in Georgetown. Avoid showing signs of wealth. Travel with caution after dark. Vehicle security, personal security, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Men should not wear shorts.
Water
Use bottled water.
Terrain
Mostly rolling highlands; low coastal plain; savannah in south.
Climate
Tropical; hot, humid, moderated by north-east trade winds; two rainy seasons (May to mid-August, mid-November to mid-January).
Natural Hazards
Flash floods are a constant threat during rainy seasons, May-June / December-January.

Dengue fever, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, malaria, polio, typhoid, yellow fever.

Water pollution from sewage and agricultural and industrial chemicals; deforestation.
Road Safety
Driving in Guyana can be hazardous because of poor road and driving standards. Only taxis from reputable companies should be used, although bandits have been known to attack some taxis.
