Location
Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone.
Pickpocketing, muggings and armed break-ins occur, especially in Conakry. Photography and filming are forbidden in many parts of the country. Weapons (various), ballistics danger areas, vehicle security, personal security, kidnappings, bandits / corruption, gunfire, legal / illegal checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, terrorism, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Do not take photos of anything to do with the military, public buildings, bridges, ports, etc.
Use bottled water only - local bottled water is also good.
Generally flat coastal plain, hilly to mountainous interior.
Generally hot and humid; monsoonal-type rainy season (June to November) with south-westerly winds; dry season (December to May) with north-easterly harmattan winds.
Hot, dry, dusty harmattan haze may reduce visibility during dry season. Rainy season May to October.
Bacterial and protozoal diarrhoea, cholera, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, Lassa fever, malaria, river blindness, bilharzia, rabies, meningococcal meningitis, schistosomiasis, typhoid fever, yellow fever. Carry basic medical supplies and consider an emergency dental kit.

Deforestation; inadequate supplies of potable water; desertification; soil contamination and erosion; overfishing, overpopulation in forest region; poor mining practices have led to environmental damage.
The standard of road maintenance is low. Beware deep potholes. Most roads are not metalled and not repaired after the rainy season. Police and militia checkpoints are found throughout the country. Travel at night is strongly not advised.
