Location

Eastern Africa, bordering the Red Sea, between Djibouti and Sudan.

Problems
Travel to the Sudanese border should be avoided. Avoid travel after dark. The Hanish islands and their coastlines should be avoided. Eritrea shares with the rest of the Horn of Africa a threat from terrorism. Street crime such as theft and robbery is rare in cities and towns. However, sensible precautions with regard to personal safety and security should be taken. Local militia groups, weapons (various), ballistics danger areas, mines, booby traps are still present, vehicle security, personal security, ambushes, kidnappings, bandits / corruption, gunfire, legal / illegal checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, terrorism, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters.
Water
Use bottled water only.
Terrain
Dominated by extension of Ethiopian north-south trending highlands, descending on the east to a coastal desert plain, on the north-west to hilly terrain and on the south-west to flat-to-rolling plains.
Climate
Hot, dry desert strip along Red Sea coast; cooler and wetter in the central highlands (up to 61 cm of rainfall annually); semi-arid in western hills and lowlands; rainfall heaviest during June-September except in coastal desert.
Natural Hazards
Frequent droughts; locust swarms.
Health Issues
Bacterial diarrhoea, bilharzia, cholera, hepatitis A, malaria, polio, rabies, typhoid fever, yellow fever. Carry a comprehensive medical pack.

Environmental Issues
Deforestation; desertification; soil erosion; overgrazing; loss of infrastructure from civil warfare.
Road Safety
Travel outside Asmara will be hampered by new restrictions. You should be aware that permits from the Ministry of Tourism are required to travel to all areas of Eritrea. Travel on main roads only as there are extensive minefields, especially near the border with Ethiopia.
