Location
Western Africa, bordering the Bight of Biafra, between Cameroon and Gabon.
Compared with other countries in the region, the level of violent crime is not high. It is mainly petty theft to both visitors and expatriates. You should take sensible personal safety precautions. Local militia groups, weapons (various), ballistics danger areas, mines, booby traps, vehicle security, personal security, ambushes, kidnappings, bandits/corruption, gunfire, legal/illegal checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building/office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation/sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, terrorism, cultures/customs, communications, emergency shelters.
Use bottled water only.
Coastal plains rise to interior hills; islands are volcanic.

Violent windstorms, flash floods.
Bacterial diarrhoea, bilharzia, cholera, hepatitis A, malaria, oriental lung fluke, polio, river blindness, typhoid fever, yellow fever.
Tap water is not potable; deforestation.
Travel outside Malabo or Bata will require you to inform Protocol Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Francophonie in advance. Most roads in the main cities are paved, however the condition of roads in rural areas is likely to be poor. Police and military roadblocks are common.
