Location

Caribbean, island between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, about half-way from Puerto Rico to Trinidad and Tobago.

Problems
Cases of crime do occur. Sensible precautions should be taken and you should be vigilant at all times. Vehicle security, personal security, general travel, off road driving, drugs, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Beachwear should be kept to the beaches / pools.

Use bottled water only.
Terrain
Rugged mountains of volcanic origin.
Climate
Tropical; moderated by north-east trade winds; heavy rainfall.
Natural Hazards
Flash floods are a constant threat; destructive hurricanes (June to November). Periodic earth tremors, earthquakes.
Health Issues
Dengue fever, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, polio, typhoid, yellow fever.

Environmental Issues
No major environmental issues.
Road Safety
Most roads are pathed and very narrow, with many blind bends. Road surfaces lack grip and are slippery in the wet. Driving at night is hazardous and road signs poor. A map is essential. Beware pedestrians in the road because of the lack of pavements.
