Street crime is increasing, pick-pocketing is rife. Mafia is taking a large amount of profit from the tourist industry. Racketeering and corruption are endemic. Beware bogus plain-clothes policemen, who may ask to see your passport and currency. Vehicle security, personal security, general travel, navigation, building / office security, cold weather injuries, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Pollution in the main cities is becoming a problem. Do not take photographs of anything connected to the military.

Bohemia in the west consists of rolling plains, hills, and plateaus surrounded by low mountains; Moravia in the east consists of very hilly country.

Air and water pollution in areas of north-west Bohemia and in northern Moravia around Ostrava present health risks; acid rain damaging forests; efforts to bring industry up to EU code should improve domestic pollution.
If planning to drive you may like to consult a local motoring hotline, available in Czech and English (tel: +420 1230). Under Czech law you must carry a fluorescent green high-visibility jacket, first aid kit, spare prescription glasses, warning triangle, complete set of spare bulbs.
