Location

South-eastern Europe, bordering the Adriatic Sea, between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia.

Problems
You should take sensible precautions when carrying money in busy tourist areas, where pickpockets are known to operate. Mines and unexploded ordnance are still uncleared from rural and mountain regions. Weapons (assorted), vehicle security, personal security, kidnappings, legal / illegal checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, cultures / customs, communications, civil disturbances / unrest, mines & booby traps, helicopter safety, health & hygiene, abduction / hostage taking.
Water
Local water is safe to drink.
Terrain
Geographically diverse; flat plains along Hungarian border, low mountains and highlands near Adriatic coastline and islands.
Climate
Mediterranean and continental; continental climate predominant with hot summers and cold winters; mild winters, dry summers along coast.
Natural Hazards
Destructive earthquakes.

Environmental Issues
Air pollution (from metallurgical plants) and resulting acid rain is damaging the forests; coastal pollution from industrial and domestic waste; landmine removal and reconstruction of infrastructure consequent to 1992-95 civil strife.
Road Safety
Roads generally in good condition. You must drive with dipped headlights during daylight. You must keep a yellow high-visibility vest in your car at all times and wear it at incidents (e.g. wheel change).
