Location

Central Africa, south of Libya.

Problems
Terrorists are active in countries neighbouring Chad, including Algeria. Armed robbery, highway bandits, ambushes and car-jacking have all been reported. Take sensible personal security precautions. Local militia groups, weapons (various), vehicle security, personal security, checkpoints, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, some places remain heavily mined, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters. Be vigilant at all times.
Water
Use bottled water only.

Broad, arid plains in centre, desert in north, mountains in north-west, lowlands in south.
Climate
Tropical in south, desert in north.
Natural Hazards
Hot, dry, dusty harmattan winds occur in north; periodic droughts; locust plagues.
Health Issues
Bacterial and protozoal diarrhoea, bilharzia, cholera, hepatitis A and E, HIV/AIDS, malaria, measles, meningococcal meningitis, polio, river blindness, sleeping sickness, schistosomiasis, typhoid fever, yellow fever.

Environmental Issues
Inadequate supplies of potable water; improper waste disposal in rural areas contributes to soil and water pollution; desertification.
Road Safety
Travel outside the capital requires authorisation from the Ministry of Interior. Roads are poor and often impassable during rainy season (July-October), especially in the south. Travel in convoy, keep doors locked, carry spare fuel and supplies. Due to highway bandits, you should not travel at night. Police checkpoints are common.
