Location

Central Africa, north of Congo (Kinshasa).

Problems
Avoid travel to this region. Incidents of theft and robbery occur regularly and armed gangs are known to operate in the outlying areas of Bangui. Take sensible personal security precautions and maintain a high level of vigilance in public places. Local militia groups targeting foreigners, weapons (various), ballistics danger areas, mines, booby traps, vehicle security, personal security, ambushes, kidnappings, bandits / corruption, gunfire, legal / illegal checkpoints, armed robberies, general travel, navigation, off road driving, building / office security, hot weather injuries, personal hygiene, sanitation / sterilisation, clothing & equipment, emergency first aid, helicopter safety, terrorism, cultures / customs, communications, emergency shelters.
Water
Use branded bottled water only, with unbroken seals. Very expensive.
Terrain
Vast, flat to rolling, monotonous plateau; scattered hills in north-east and south-west.
Climate
Tropical; hot, dry winters; mild to hot, wet summers.
Natural Hazards
Hot, dry, dusty harmattan winds affect northern areas; floods are common.
Health Issues
Bacterial diarrhoea, bilharzia, cholera, hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS, malaria, meningococcal meningitis, polio, rabies, yellow fever, typhoid fever. Ensure you are covered for air evacuation.

Environmental Issues
Tap water is not potable; poaching has diminished the country's reputation as one of the last great wildlife refuges; desertification; deforestation.
Road Safety
Do not travel alone. Use convoys, although these are not exempt from attack. If travelling between CAR and Cameroon, it is no longer safe to do so without military / police escort. Petrol is in short supply.
