“FAW training includes EFAW and also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illness”. (HSE guidance)
This new HSE approved qualification came into effect on 1 October 2009, along with new guidance on assessing the needs of First Aid in your workplace.
Depending on your workplace risk assessment, you may need individuals who are qualified as First Aiders at Work. How many you will need depends on how many people are employed at your premises (see Table 2 below).
COURSE DURATION
A minimum of 18 hours spread over at least 3 days. Ideally the course should be run over 3 consecutive days.
COURSE SYLLABUS INCLUDES
CERTIFICATION
Subject to successful completion of the course, and following assessment by a first aid assessor, participants are issued with a First Aid at Work certificate approved by the Health & Safety Executive. This qualification is valid for three years and can be renewed by attending a 2-day re-qualification course.
NB: The HSE strongly recommends that all First Aiders attend an annual refresher programme that includes a minimum of three hours of first aid instruction.
NUMBERS
It is recommended that group numbers do not exceed the ratio of 12 delegates to 1 instructor. Larger groups will require more instructors.
ASSESSMENT
Delegates are assessed by an independent Assessor on their ability to act safely, promptly and effectively for a casualty who is unresponsive, who requires CPR, and who is wounded and bleeding.
