I just wanted to write and thank you again for an excellent training last week. I had heard great things about the Centurion training, but my experience definitely surpassed my expectations. You all did a fantastic job building rapport, focusing on the essentials, and making the training applicable and meaningful for all of us. I hope I never have to employ most of what I learned(!) but I feel confident in my ability to do so thanks entirely to you. Cheers, and very best wishes.

My name is Yannis Behrakis and I'm a Reuters photographer based in Athens. I did the first course of Reuters journalists a few years ago with my friend Kurt Schork...
Kurt was killed in an ambush in the jungle of Sierra Leone on May 24, 2000 along with APTN cameraman Miguel Gil Moreno. It was me, Kurt, Miguel, and Reuters TV cameraman Mark Chisholm, and 8 Sierra Leone soldiers traveling in two civilian vehicles in no-man's land some 100-km northeast of Freetown when we were ambushed by RUF rebels...
Kurt, Miguel, and the 8 soldiers died in the 30 or more minutes of gun battle. Only me and Mark (injured) survived. I hid for more than three hours in the jungle using all my survival skills, but one of the things I remembered well when I started crawling away from the ambush was the day in a forest in England. When walking through a path, one of us triggered a booby trap. I also remembered the small anti-personnel mines (in the demonstration). Then I decided to move through the most difficult path to avoid possible traps, thinking that if there were traps they would be placed on a path used by humans … it was a good day on the course and a horrific day in the jungle. Thanks for that day. Cheers Yannis.
- Message to Centurion from award-winning photographer Yannis Behrakis
This M. D. from the Associated Press from last week’s course. Guess what happened to me just four days after Centurion – I had to provide first aid! As I was returning home from work in Moscow last night a car accident happened right in front of my eyes, very similar to the one that we dealt with last week. My first thought was Oh, my God, I cannot stand blood, I don’t need this, but then I said to myself that after having been trained to give first aid it was my duty to help. So I parked my car and started helping one of the two injured drivers. He was clearly in a state of shock, just like Tough was describing it – running around, then collapsed, didn’t remember where he was going. He had a concussion, a broken jaw and a deep cut on his head – I identified all the injuries. So I treated him for shock, put on bandage, reassured him – just like we were taught. At the end when the ambulance arrived he called me his ‘savior'...Thanks for a great course.

This was an unbelievably worthwhile experience. I was seriously impressed by the expertise of the instructors, and the authority they exercised. Scenarios were frighteningly real. Thank you to the whole team.

Would have no hesitation in recommending course to other medics / doctors going to hostile / isolated environments – in hospital practice you don’t meet many 'first aid' scenarios.
- Dr T de B, aid worker
Just wanted to say the refresher course was excellent. One thing I did not say in my evaluation was that it was really good to have the casualties be your guys rather than classmates (which I had in my first course), so that they could guide us a bit while we're practicing but also debrief us after the exercise. Keith and Pete (instructors) were also very good and managed to cram a lot of info into a short time with the aid of your Powerpoint presentation and other visual aids and a good sense of humor which helped if the sheer amount and rapid pace made me lose concentration.
The venue also is very nice, and the food excellent.
Thanks much!

As a Vietnam veteran (US Army) and correspondent who’s covered wars or conflict in S. Korea, Central America, Persian Gulf, Somalia, Bosnia and Albania/Kosovo, I thought I knew something about covering conflict. This course taught me immeasurable lessons for both past reflection and evaluation and future use. I intend to apply them soon in Iraq where I’ll spend six weeks with McClatchy...
The five Centurion trainers we had were first-rate, top-drawer, memorable and hilarious. Many thanks and my best regards to any of the Fab 5—Peter, Keith, Al, Paul and Taff—whose path you cross.

I and a colleague attended your company's HEFAT course in Virginia during March of last year prior to embedding with the Canadian Forces in Kandahar, Afghanistan. I've been meaning to drop you a line to let you know the high regard I have for the course and its instructors based on my experience. Speaking to a room full of journalists is not a task I envy - I wouldn't want to do it on a regular basis. The instructors professionally addressed all inquiries and the first aid instruction is by far the best and most thorough I've received.
I was expecting the course to concentrate more on things military. In fact, in my course review I wrote something about the course not being more specifically tailored to somebody preparing to embed with a military organization. Specifically, I was expecting some sort of magic 'You do this in this situation and you do that in that situation'. Following my experience in Afghanistan, I can confidently say that my assessment in that regard was not at all on the mark. In fact, the most important bit of information I took with me was to simply be more aware and observant of my surroundings. It would be pointless for your instructors to talk at length about soldiering since it's a skill that takes years of training to hone and, quite frankly, not my job.
Your instructors alluded to a lack of fire discipline among some American troops. Without going into specifics, they must have different ROE than every other army in theatre. I strongly urge you to continue emphasizing this point in your courses.

HEFAT made me consider a number of scenarios and issues I would never consider threats. We were always encouraged to participate.

Very professional and approachable / friendly instructors. Despite seriousness of course learning was made interesting and fun. Had instructor to myself for several theory sections - easy to go over sections more than once and ask questions. Course length just right for refresher. Comfortable rooms, excellent food in restaurant. Internet access room very useful. Outside locations ideal for simulations. Scenarios really made me think.

Very good, professional instruction. The fact that we students had few questions after each subject tells you that the instructors were comprehensive in their instruction. There was a good blend of classroom, theory, demonstration and then going out and attempting it.

13 May 2005
Very good balance between surprise, escalation, repetition etc. Realism of scenarios was probably about as good as possible without a Hollywood budget. Generally really good, an eye-opener and very common sense based.
- DG, The Associated Press, 13 May 2005
Best course I've had so much useful information. It's so much to take in but all relevant to my job.
- MF, Christian Science Monitor, 6 May 2005
Overall the course was very well organised and conducted. I found the topics most useful to be those dealing with conflict / war / rioting situations. Learning about soldiers' / combatants' mentality and psychology was the best aspect of this course and I would have liked to hear more of it.
- HG, Human Rights Watch
1 March 2005
Very realistic. Touches on all aspects of possible scenarios of a hostile or different environment. It was very good. Well balanced. Very well organised. Good use of technology, and body dummies for CPR. Very realistic scenarios - loved this part of the course because it's when you are experiencing it that one learns the most. I loved the First Aid - it is very, very necessary at all times. I just loved the whole course. I would advise it to every single journalist whether or not he/she is heading to a hostile environment.

There was a good team spirit and everyone was encouraged to participate without being coerced. It helped that those running the course also got stuck in. Staff were great actors and really brought a lot of realism to the role playing - were especially good at making things difficult for us! Days were organised well with regular breaks and set meal times. Great outdoor space for role play / scenarios.

Fantastic facilities. Ideal location. Easy transit from classroom to practical exercise.
- MC, Freelance Cameraman (via Rory Peck Trust Bursary)
Ideal simulations - some instructors clearly should consider show business. I feel as if now I know how much I didn't know!

A lot to take away from the course. Good pacing, fun exercises and appreciated non-medical approach (ie. little jargon). As good as it gets.
- JS, The Associated Press
Not just very well-organised, but also highly practical and focused on the real problems we face in the field. As important, there were plenty of gear changes which kept interest levels very high. The lecturers were excellent, not just well-informed and focused but also very entertaining.
- NW, ITN
Very thorough. Very impressed with expertise of the instructors. Very practical camp and location near Washington. Good realism for training. First Aid was much more realistic than previous training I've had.

I'm going to Afghanistan again in another week or two. This was excellent preparation. I can't imagine absorbing more material given the time.

Critical, critical stuff. I don't know how we survived without it. Thank you all so much - I would be interested to know (and only God can tell us!) how many lives you've saved already. There will be many more.

- AS, Sky News
I know now that I survived by chance in the past - not by knowledge.
- UA, ARD/WDR
Generally good, thought-provoking and useful. When we were participating in activities, they were demanding but at the right level. Very well organised - real military preparation much in evidence. The most valuable areas was 'hands on'. Excellent.
- JS, ITN
Centurion does a very good job of cramming much material into a very short space. Its instructors are extremely professional and have great bedside manner. They are also very good actors.

On Feb 16, 2001 I was in a riot at Ramallah and took cover behind a barricade car. I wouldn't now.

Overall I was extremely impressed with the course. I would like to see more freelancers doing it though, as big organisations seem to be increasingly sending them in place of staffers. I'll be recommending this course strongly to my freelance colleagues.
- PC, Freelance via Rory Peck Trust Bursary
Almost too much info to take in. First aid training excellent. Very good acting really made it feel real.
- DT, UNICEF
Course fell into place more as each day ended. I felt things were done in a good order. I think the course covered it all and will gladly come back from time to time for refresher courses.
- RG, The Associated Press
The hands-on was the best bit because it really drives home the lessons.
- ZH, Freelance via Rory Peck Trust Bursary
Overall - extraordinary, even far better than expected.
- FS, The Committee to Protect Journalists
I learned a lot. It was easy to get into it and participate. I was amazed that although I knew everything was a put on, my adrenaline was still running. I would just like a little bit more of everything. And I don't really want to go back to work.
